William Kentridge

William Kentridge

William Kentridge is considered one of South Africa’s most celebrated living artists.

Kentridge’s extensive exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts in London is a must-see. His involvement with the curation of the show is evident. He segregates his paintings by subject representing the apartheid regime, and has drawn directly onto the RA walls in charcoal to create a sense of immediacy and pace, with the pentimenti still visible. These drawings play a huge role in the exhibition framing his multiple stop-motion videos which echo throughout the galleries. He combines real photographic footage of the brutalities committed against victims of the apartheid, with his own charcoal drawings depicting scenes of torture. The experience is overwhelming - both emotionally and visually.

The exhibition runs until 11 December.
